At IJssel Dental we offer modern filling options to restore teeth affected by caries or damage. We no longer use amalgam fillings due to the disadvantages that these fillings bring. Instead, we opt for high-quality direct and indirect fillings, depending on your needs.
Direct Fillings
Indirect Fillings
At IJssel Dental, we no longer place amalgam fillings due to some disadvantages, such as the visible color and possible health risks due to the presence of mercury in the material. There is a risk of exposure to mercury vapors, which can cause health problems. When an amalgam filling needs to be replaced, we often opt for laboratory fillings or crowns, as composite fillings may not be strong enough to withstand the forces of chewing, especially in the back teeth. Laboratory fillings or crowns, on the other hand, do provide the necessary strength and durability.
We understand that a visit to the dentist can sometimes raise questions and concerns, so we have put together this section to provide you with clear and concise answers to the most common questions.

Amalgam fillings have disadvantages such as visible color and aesthetic problems. In addition, they can expand and shrink over the years, which can lead to further damage to the tooth.
If an amalgam filling breaks or wears out, it is usually necessary to replace it with another filling or a crown. Laboratory fillings or a crown offer a stronger and more aesthetic solution.
Laboratory fillings such as porcelain or resin inlays/onlays are made in a laboratory and provide a strong, durable and aesthetic solution for larger or more extensive damage. Direct fillings are placed on site and are suitable for smaller repairs.
During the first appointment, an impression of your tooth is taken and a temporary filling is placed. The permanent filling is made in a lab and placed during the second appointment.
The cost varies depending on the type of filling. Direct fillings usually cost between €40 and €150, while lab fillings can cost between €200 and €600. We will discuss the exact cost during your consultation.
Direct fillings such as composite and glass ionomer typically last 5-10 years. Laboratory fillings such as porcelain inlays can last up to 15 years or longer, depending on oral hygiene and use.
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, and limiting sugary foods. Regular dental checkups also help monitor your oral health.
