The effect of the Smile Make-Over
David, a 48-year-old man, came to IJssel Dental with complaints about the
discoloration of his teeth. He felt uncomfortable and ashamed
to smile.
David was also afraid of the dentist and had not been to the dentist for years. He wanted to refresh his smile, but his fear and embarrassment made it difficult for him to take the first step.

The treatment
Intake
During the intake it became clear that David experienced a lot of stress in his life, which led to grinding his teeth and breaking his teeth. David wanted to get "veneers" (porcelain veneers), but given his bite and chewing power, these were not strong enough and would probably break quickly. This would not help him in the long run.
In order to both remedy the discoloration and realize a shape adjustment, we opted for monolithic zirconium crowns. These offer both strength and aesthetics and are a durable solution to his problem. Not everyone is suitable for this treatment, but we discussed all the pros and cons extensively during the intake.
Test setup
At the second appointment, the temporary design was placed in David's mouth. This gave him a chance to get used to the new shape and appearance of his smile.
Confirmation of the design
During the third appointment David indicated that he was happy with the design and we wanted to move forward with the Smile Make-Over. He was happy with how it looked and was ready for the final step.
Placement of the final restorations
The final restorations were placed at the fourth appointment. After placement, the gums and teeth were still somewhat irritated by the procedure. This is normal, and the restorations only came into their own after the gums and soft tissues had adapted to the new situation.

Results of the Smile Make-Over
Result after 1 week
After about a week, the gums had fully recovered, and the results of the Smile Make-Over were clearly visible. The aesthetics of the restorations were optimal, and David was pleased with his new smile.
Result after 1 year
The final result of the Smile Make-Over was a durable and aesthetically pleasing result, and after one year David was still very satisfied. The zirconium crowns proved to be the best choice for him, as they are both strong and beautiful, which contributes to a long-lasting solution for his teeth.
The trajectory
The process of a Smile Make-Over differs per patient and can vary from 1 month to 2 years, depending on the wishes and the chosen treatments. This is discussed in detail during the intake or, in the case of a more complex Smile Make-Over, two weeks later. The costs depend on various factors, such as the desired results, the complexity of the treatment, any pre-treatments and the materials that are ordered externally from the dental laboratory. The price for a Smile Make-Over is on average between €2,000 and €55,000.
